Dental Implants

Why We Recommend Implants

The purpose of dental implants is to establish a sturdy base for new teeth replacements that mimic the appearance, function, and sensation of natural teeth. Dental implants are revolutionizing our patients' comfort by restoring their ability to chew with confidence. With dental implants, a missing tooth can be replaced, virtually indistinguishable from its neighboring teeth. Dental implants also promote healthy preservation of facial structure by thwarting bone loss, often seen when teeth go missing. For replacing missing teeth, dental implants are regarded as one of the best options for overall oral health.

How Implants Compare to Traditional Dentures

For centuries, dentures have served as a popular solution for missing teeth; however, they do possess some significant flaws. Our natural teeth stimulate the jawbone while we chew food, supplying it with strength and preventing bone deterioration. Dentures aren't very efficient at delivering this stimulation, leading to serious oral health problems such as bone loss in the jaw, which results in poorly fitting dentures that slide out easily and create sore spots on the gums.

Alternatively, dental implants are synthetic teeth that act like tooth roots and are embedded into the jawbone. Implants significantly decrease the risk of bone loss, slipping or moving during eating or talking and leaving your gums feeling sensitive. Caring for implants is as simple as taking care of natural teeth. While implantation can be costly, it's their only downside compared to the removable dentures. Additionally, implants can be utilized to replace individual teeth or act as support for complete or partial dentures.

What Are the Benefits?

Dental implants are the ultimate choice for those with missing teeth in Fort Lauderdale and the Coral Ridge community. The impact of missing teeth often translates to compromising one’s self-esteem, having to cover their mouths while laughing or speaking to hide the shame of their oral state. The most apparent advantage of having dental implants is the ability to enjoy life without any limitations, but there’s more to it than just that.

  • Improved appearance and increased self-esteem: Dental implants are fused permanently with the bone, making them look and feel like one's natural teeth. Dental implants allow you to smile confidently, thereby boosting self-esteem.
  • Improved speech: Teeth may slip and slide in dentures, causing slurring or mumbling. These implants remain stable while speaking, giving you full confidence.
  • Improved comfort and convenience: With no need for messy adhesives to keep it in place, slipping and removing dentures becomes a thing of the past.
  • Easier and pain-free eating: The sliding dentures can make chewing challenging; dental implants function like natural teeth, enabling you to eat your favorite foods without any discomfort. The implant posts are stable and sturdy, providing support to the new teeth.
  • Improved oral health: Unlike a tooth-supported bridge, dental implants don't require the support of nearby teeth. This helps to maintain your natural teeth's position, preventing further damage to your oral structure.
  • Durability: Dental implants are built to be long-lasting and durable and may last up to many years with proper care. Some implants can even last for a lifetime.
  • Preventing bone loss: Dental implant posts prevent bone loss by replacing the tooth root, which provides the needed stimulation to bones during chewing.
  • Protection of remaining natural teeth: Dental implants help to maintain your natural teeth's original positioning, promoting a healthy overall state of teeth and jaw structure.

Care for Your Dental Implant

Ensuring the longevity of your implant involves practicing good oral hygiene habits daily. Implants can't develop cavities like natural teeth, but they don't have a periodontal ligament between the gum and implant, making the surrounding tissue susceptible to infection. As a result, we recommend that our dental implant patients remain vigilant with brushing and flossing to prevent possible issues such as peri-implantitis.

The Components of a Dental Implant

The dental implant comprises three components:

  1. Implant: a titanium screw that is surgically placed within the patient’s jaw bone in the area of the missing tooth
  2. Abutment: a small attachment that ensures a perfect fit
  3. Crown: the top portion of the tooth that is attached to the implant and blends with your existing teeth

Each year, millions of Americans seek dental implant solutions to fill in gaps within their smiles. Dental implants are an affordable option that can endure for years, provided that they receive proper and adequate care. The dental implant procedure is uncomplicated and routine at our office.

Flippers and Removable Partial Dentures

What Is a Flipper

For patients waiting for permanent implants after losing a tooth due to injury or disease, a flipper tooth serves as a removable and temporary solution. They are easily removable, making them simple to clean and maintain hygiene. Dental flippers also enable comfortable eating during temporary use.

Types Of Dental Flippers

Four varieties of removable flippers are on the market at present: the removable dental flipper or retainer, delineator, Essix-style retainer, and Snap-On smile. The removable dental flipper or retainer resembles orthodontic retainers and fills the gaps of natural teeth with teeth attached to it. The delineator, which is made of a more pliable material, is similar to a removable retainer and is only suitable for specific patients.

The Essix-style retainer is an invisible aligner tray housing teeth for patients. Lastly, the Snap-On smile covers multiple teeth like a removable bridge. The doctor will determine which flipper is right for you.

Full and Partial Dentures

Conventional Dentures Versus Full Dentures

When it comes to full dentures, there are two primary types. The conventional full dentures require removing all teeth, and the patient must allow their tissue to heal before placing the full set of dentures, which may take a few weeks to several months. During this healing process, the patient goes without teeth.

On the other hand, immediate full dentures are the alternative that comprises placing dentures during the same visit after removing the remaining teeth. Dr Bodnar will take mouth measurements before the procedure to ensure a snug fit after teeth removal. Also, a follow-up visit will be required as the jawbone and mouth shift over time. The gradual tightening of the dentures will be necessary as the mouth heals. Partial dentures, comparable to bridges, are another option for patients that are removable.

Adjusting to the New Dentures

It takes some time to adjust to dentures since the flesh-colored base fits over the gums, which may cause some patients to feel obstruction or bulkiness. Sometimes, they can feel loosely placed, leading to improper speech or eating. However, as time passes, they become more comfortable and less problematic, and eventually, patients get accustomed to them.

In need of a tooth replacement, dentures are a perfect fit that can be inserted or removed at any preferred time. Our practice at Dr Gabor Bodnar DMD offers affordable dentures made of top-quality materials in the market. When there are limited viable teeth besides the missing ones, Dr Bodnar may suggest dentures as a practical remedy. In such circumstances, the remaining teeth get extracted, and a full set of dentures is prescribed.

Implant Retained Dentures

What Are Implant-Retained Dentures?

When seeking a solution for a missing tooth, dentures offer a convenient option that allows for easy insertion and removal. Here at Dr Gabor Bodnar DMD’s practice, we specialize in affordable dentures crafted from premium materials available on the market. Dr Bodnar might recommend dentures in cases where there are scarce viable teeth aside from the missing ones, making it a practical remedy. In such a scenario, the remaining teeth are removed, and a full set of dentures is administered.

How Do Implant-Retained Dentures Work?

Implant-retained dentures offer an alternative to conventional dental implants with one implant per tooth. They provide permanent stability by using only four implants per arch, reducing the number of implants by 24. Since the dentures are anchored by the bone, there is no pressure on the gums, making chewing easier and minimizing bone loss in the jaw. While they are more commonly used for the lower jaw, implant-retained dentures can also be customized for the upper jaw.

If a patient has lost all of their natural teeth but still has enough healthy jawbone to support implants, Dr Bodnar may suggest implant-retained dentures as an alternative to a costly full mouth reconstruction with individual implants.

Implant Retained Partials

What Are Implant-Retained Partials?

Implant-retained partials offer a solution that combines the benefits of dentures and individual implants. Unlike removable partial dentures that fit over gums and depend on neighboring natural teeth for support, implant-retained partials provide greater stability and durability. They are relatively less expensive compared to individual implants to replace multiple missing teeth.

How Do They Work?

With implant-retained partials, the stability needed can be achieved using only two implants, as opposed to conventional dental implants that require one per tooth. Once in place, the partial will snap onto the implants and blend in perfectly with your remaining natural teeth. Since they're supported by the bone, the partials don't exert pressure on the gums, making chewing more comfortable and preventing jaw bone loss.

In cases where individual implants for each missing tooth may not be affordable, Dr Bodnar may suggest implant-retained dentures as an alternative for patients with some natural teeth and sufficient healthy jaw bone to support the implants.
