Periodontal Cleaning

How We Combat Gum Disease

If you have received a diagnosis of gum disease and find yourself feeling worried, there's no need to be concerned. We’re here to help. Through considerate treatment and diligent maintenance, we can effectively address the issue and safeguard your healthy smile. Based on your specific condition and requirements, the doctor may suggest a treatment known by various names such as root planing and scaling, periodontal cleaning, or "deep cleaning." Rest assured, we have the expertise and resources to recommend the most suitable treatment for you.

The Problem

When a bacterial infection has progressed to a certain point, standard cleaning is no longer sufficient in remedying it. Hardened deposits of plaque, known as calculus, have formed under the surface of your gums and persistently aggravate and spread the infection.

The Solution

We use specialized instruments to eliminate the calculus that has formed below the gum line. Additionally, we will smooth the root surfaces to prevent plaque from reattaching. After these steps have been taken, your gums will be able to begin healing. It is important to keep in mind that ongoing maintenance and monitoring may be required for gum disease treatment. This includes more frequent cleanings to safeguard your recovering gums and track your progress.

Don’t Live With Gum Disease

Gum disease varies from case to case. If the infection is severe, additional assistance may be required. However, we are able to work with you and offer solutions to better your oral health. Don’t wait to treat gum disease. Let us assist you in creating a plan. Schedule an appointment with us today to explore your options.

Periodontal Splint

When Is It Necessary for a Periodontal Splint?

Periodontal disease can cause the surrounding gum and bone tissue to weaken, which gradually loosens teeth, making chewing uncomfortable and painful. Alternatively, teeth can become loose due to a traumatic injury. One solution for such an issue is periodontal splinting, where the affected teeth are joined together, spreading the pressure evenly when biting.

How Periodontal Splints Work

Splints for teeth can be temporary or fixed, depending on the severity of the issue. Extra-coronal splints can be temporarily bonded to the enamel, or intra-coronal splints inserted by creating a small channel in the teeth. A custom metal splint is cemented in place for intra-coronal splints. In contrast, permanent splinting involves fusing the crowns of the affected teeth together.

Scaling and Root Planing

Why Scaling and Root Planing Are Needed

Chronic gum disease or periodontitis is the result of the accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, on your teeth. If not cleaned the correct way, the bacteria in plaque can solidify into tartar which causes inflamed gum tissue. Without treatment, the gums start detaching from the teeth, forming pockets where the bacteria can thrive. It becomes almost impossible to eliminate plaque and tartar through typical brushing and flossing at this stage, increasing the risks of bone and tooth loss. Dr Bodnar suggests scaling and root planing as a solution for patients diagnosed with periodontitis.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing Treatment?

To treat periodontitis, scaling and root planing are a two-part procedure. The first step, scaling, involves Dr Bodnar's removal of all the plaque and tartar above and below the gumline, cleaning the pocket's bottom. In the second step, root planing, Dr Bodnar smoothes out the roots of your teeth to allow your gums to re-attach while simultaneously preventing the re-adhesion of bacteria, plaque, and tartar under the gumline. The procedure may require several appointments to guarantee that your teeth are plaque-free and healthy.

Aftercare

During your follow-up appointments, we will evaluate the healing progress of your teeth and gums. Patients who had red or swollen gums due to periodontitis usually observe a decrease or a complete elimination of tenderness and bleeding. If your gums respond well and remain stable, no further treatment will be required.
